I cannot recommend this company

I’m not one to leave reviews, but I must share my experience with Michael & Sons. We recently moved to the Chesapeake, VA area (military family) and became aware our water heater was leaking. I called Michael & Sons because they appeared at the top of my Google search and seemingly had great reviews. They were able to send someone out ASAP via an easy online booking, which I appreciated. He was very friendly and shared my options for purchasing a new water heater. He came back the very next day for install. Everything was fine.

After he left, I began to notice the hot water in our sinks and bath tubs smelled like chemicals. My husband, who was underway at the time, was not home to help verify this for me. I called Michaels & Sons back and asked them if this was normal? I also have a toddler at home and am expecting my second child. I was not comfortable using the water, let alone bathing my child in it. The installer came back and reassured me, though his explanation was that it was likely the adhesive (not the proper term) he used, which he showed me is non-toxic. He told me it was normal and the smell should go away “in a few days.” I felt so frustrated because this didn’t feel normal. The smell was so awful and it made me scared. I ended up asking my neighbors, who came over and verified the smell for me. They also said it is NOT NORMAL. I call the company back and end up crying to the receptionist because I’m frustrated and just spent over $3,000. A manager called me back and tried to give me a chemistry lesson in water heater installation. I felt like I was gastlit over and over again. I’m just an emotional pregnant woman.

My neighbor was the only one who offered me solid advice, spend the next few hours filling and draining our bath tubs. After a few hours (and so much wasted water), the smell finally went away. Fast forward two weeks and we have the city inspector come out to inspect the job. He highlighted a few major areas that the installer missed, including a huge safety concern - a valve that could pump out 200 degree water into my garage? I about had a heart attack. So Michael & Sons had to come out again, for a fourth time. The manager calls me to explain the situation and I am very frustrated. He basically chocks it up to human error and again, I feel like my feelings are not valid and he is gaslighting me. Aren’t you guys supposed to be the experts? They blamed the inspector as if they don’t know what they’re doing. But Michael & Sons didn’t follow Chesapeake codes? Shouldn’t you know the codes of the areas you work in?

Michael & Sons came out for a fourth installation. The city inspector came out for the second time and verified the work a week later, thank god. But all this being said I spent over $3,000 and the process from start to finish has been over a month.

I cannot recommend Michael & Sons to anyone. And while the team members are nice enough and they have an easy, stream-lined appointment process, the experience was such a pain.

While they might be slightly more expensive than smaller other groups- they were very professional and timely. My service was outstanding with no issues. I have used them twice for hot water heaters and have been pleased.

Tabitha was absolutely fantastic! We called on Monday for a leak in our ceiling, got an appointment on Tuesday, and not only was Tabitha early, but she was efficient, found the problem almost immediately, and fixed it within an hour. She also did a leak search just to be sure that the issue was what she thought it was, and she recorded a video to show exactly what she saw and where the water was coming from. She was professional, communicative, and so polite and helpful. We cannot recommend her enough. We are Michael & Son customers for life, now! Thank you!

Electrician Brent Fullilove was very professional and courteous. We needed an estimate and he explained the different options to us. He advised if we purchased electric fireplace the different specs to be aware of and what he could do. Michael and sons employees have all been very capable.

Please save yourself the trouble and call someone else. It took three days for them to diagnose the issue. It was a crushed duct that literally took the second technician three minutes to find and ten to correct. I cannot, ethically, raise the review any higher, because if I had called someone else I bet it would have been so much more effortless and probably a lot less expensive. I would really recommend, as someone who has paid this company SEVEN THOUSAND dollars, like no joke, seven thousand dollars, to find a company that is going to be knowledgeable and make any issues that arise during the life of your HVAC unit. I’m glad I’m selling this house because it means that I will no longer have to deal with this company.

I called out a repair technician in July of 2021. He told me the reason my breaker kept tripping was the old unit was defective. The next day a salesman came out. I purchased a SERE 17, which is an upgrade form the older SERE 12. The one I purchased was not in stock when it came time to install, which was only a couple of days later. The installed unit is a SERE 19. Once the new unit was installed and turned on, the breaker tripped! Huh, that is weird. Replaced the breaker and have not had issues since.

Now I am unable to get the receipt from the original technician that came out after calling repeatedly. My new "more efficient" units uses more kilowatt hours than the old SERE 12 did. I have compared the usage to years past from my electric company and I use more energy, even though the summer months were cooler and the winter months warmer. The only change was the AC unit! I have called and had several other technicians out to look at the unit and test and what-not, with no explanations at all. The last time, the guy said he was moving up to the regional manager and he would call me back. That was in November 2022. I have called several times since, still trying to get that receipt that was supposed to be sent to my email account in 2021 and to ask when this manager guy is going to get in touch with me. I am told we will leave a message for him. He has yet to call me.

I would steer clear of this company, personally. The ONLY reason I continue to call is to try and get resolution to what they have promised to do without an action to actually keep said promise.

The one star review would be a no star if that were an option, just for the company as a whole. The service techs that come out are friendly and understand my frustration with their employer.

I liked the easy online scheduling. I was able to get a convenient date and time. The technician (Matt) called to let me know he was on way. I received a text with a picture and information about the tech coming to my house. He was very professional and friendly. Fixed the problem and the pricing was less than expected. I will definitely use them again.
