I have been working with Len’s Heating for many years. They are a great company, people and partner. Integrity, trust, friendship and quality of work are some of they ways I would describe what they are all about. Thanks for all you do!!
I bought a house in 2020 that had a four ton Trane XL18i heat pump and four ton Trane TAM7 air handler put in by Lens in 2013. What I found:
The TAM7 works best with a bottom return but there is limited height space with the existing ductwork so a side return was used. The installation manual states, if possible, the unit should be put on a six inch box, which it is. However, the actual opening of the box only measures 3 inches. Next, a side return kit (BAYSRKIT100) must be used for a side return application. This kit was not used. Next, it states there must be a minimum of 6 inches of ducting between the unit and the filter. My filter box is is mounted directly to the side of the air handler. My return ductwork is such that, on the ceiling, the duct work runs on both sides of the supply duct. They had the return ducts connected with and 8" round pipe into the side of a 12x18 drop. The return drop by itself is no where near big enough to handle 4 tons of air much less trying to add another 200 CFM to it with the connection pipe. Because of not knowing how to install this unit, I have 1.25" w.c. of static pressure which makes the unit very noisy and not enough return air which, 1) uses more energy 2) wears out the equipment faster, and 3) heats and cools the house poorly.
On to the electrical. The back up heat strips require a 60 amp breaker. While there is one on the unit, the breaker in the panel feeding it is a 50 amp and also on #8 wire. There is a 4x4 junction box on the ceiling with the strip heat wire and another #12 wire that was cut AND LEFT HOT WITH NO TAPE OR WIRE NUT. Just left hanging there, hot, in the junction box waiting to shock someone which of course was me.Also, heat pumps require at least two strands of 18/8 control wire and they left a spaghettied up rats nest of wire and wire nuts hanging on the outside of the air handler.
On to the load calculation. After actually performing a Manual J I found my house required a three ton unit and blower and not the four ton that Lens installed. Why?
As far as the outdoor unit is concerned, the XL18i is a rather tall and big condensing unit. They put it on a semi rigid two inch pad. Well, the pad settled and bent on one side and it is 2 inches out of level across 3 feet. I have no idea of the refrigerant piping installation practices of Lens in 2013 but Im going to guess that no nitrogen was used when brazing in the copper lines andI'll almost guarantee no micron gauge was used when pulling the vacuum but i could be wrong.
And, finally, the TAM7 installation manual states, IN BOLD LETTERS, that an atomizing humidifier CANNOT be installed this air handler. You guessed it. There is a 12 gallon bypass humidifier installed a couple years later.
Lastly, but not leastly, while doing due diligence on the home purchase, there was no record of a permit with the city to change the HVAC equipment.
I have never used Lens and cannot speak to their current business practices, but looking at what they installed in my own basement and yard I can't help but wonder, did they just not know or did they just not care?
Couldn't be better! Owner came promptly within half hour to address my problem.of heat system not working properly Gave me answers to resolving my problem understandably and with options. Very reasonably priced and took time to explain all details including the pictured items. Order items needed and had installers here within two days on time and resolved all issues and had my system up and working. It feels wonderful not to be freezing tonight!!! Very pleasant to deal with and very polite. I could not be happier Thank you sooo much Len and Rich and Andrew!!!
These people went out of their way to help me. I needed a manual for a 34-yr old furnace in my house. The previous owners had painted over the schematic on the inside of the housing, and I needed to troubleshoot a failing switch in the dead of a single-digit winter. I called them up asking if they happened to have any info on this model. I was elated when they called me back and emailed me a scan of the product manual. When I get my new furnace, I'll be going to these to Len's.
I highly recommend. From start to finish a great experience. Customer service is awesome and prices are reasonable. Mike came out after business hours to repair our furnace.
Len’ s company is first class. Eric, our regular technician is knowledgeable; helpful; courteous and exceptionally detailed. I referred many to Len’s Heating. They are the best!
Len's hired me to do work for them. I had a psychiatric issue and ended up in the hospital and they fired me without regard, even though I had my family contact them to inform them that I would be indisposed. They knew from the time of my interview that I suffer from PTSD and was undergoing intense therapy. Horrible people! I would not trust them to change a furnace filter!
gave me great deal on new furnace. removed my 27 year old furnace(i presume they gave it a descent burial) and replaced it in 4 hours. very polite and hard working.
Everyone i spoke with was friendly and knowledgeable. The tech was great. He fixed the problem and helped me with an additional issue. Always being respectful and courteous.
