For starters United Refrigeration & Air Conditioning’s technician Steven Sanders showed up at 5pm for a 2:30-3pm appointment. Then he sat in my drive way for 10 minutes and talked on the phone. No apology for being late.
I believe this company pays their technicians commission because Steven was trying to upsale me the entire time he was there. For example, he immediately found the reason for the service call was because my drain line was clogged but he then tells me he wants to rip out my duct attached to the air handler to look at the other side of my coils because dirty coils could cause my unit not to work as well, and says he will need to pull the entire air handler out to clean them. He then proceeds to puncture my duct wall without my permission. He also tells me I could have low freon too which could be another reason why my unit would not turn on.
If I had no basic knowledge this man would clearly continue to take advantage and upsale my service call. The condition of the coils in the air handler had nothing to do with why my unit was not turning on. The coils also looked just fine from what you can side inside the air handler. But in the event I wanted to have them clean you would NOT need to pull the air handler out to clean them as he falsely stated. Low freon also does NOT cause your unit to not turn, which he also falsely stated.
This should have been a simple service call fix because it was just the drain that was clogged and the water level was high enough to trigger the sensor preventing the unit from turning on. But instead this technician was blowing smoking in my ears trying to upsale me. He then quotes me $125 plus the $86 trip fee to clean out the water and pour chemical down the drain to clear the clog. When originally calling United Refrigeration & Air Conditioning and booking the appointment I confirmed with their scheduler that their service call minimum $86 fee would be applied to the service balance. So either she lied to me or this guy is continuing his efforts to increase his total invoice. Also, I couldn’t understand why he is charging $125 to vacuum out a little bit of water and pour some chemical down the drain, which would take him a minimal amount of time to do.
I asked the tech to leave without any service and paid the $86 fee. When he left I grabbed my shop vac, went outside where the drain line exited the house and vacuumed out the clogged line. I was done in less than 10 minutes and the ac was back on. I also went on Amazon and ordered some $12 Nu Line drain cleaner to later pour down the drain to clean out any remaining residue and some $5 tablets to place in my drain pan to prevent it from happening again.
In the end I was mad at myself for not investigating the issue before calling any HVAC service company. Had I just opened the air handler I would have easily found the problem. But I was even more disappointed having to deal with such a dishonest person as Steven Sanders and United Refrigeration & Air Conditioning. But they are the big loser here because they lost a future customer that was in need of an honest HVAC company to annually clean the coils to my 2 outside units and 2 inside air handlers, to call on when in need and to upgrade my units in 5-10 years. Instead they just got away with my $86. I highly recommend NOT calling them and search for a company that does not pay their employees commission.
United Refrigeration Auburndale Fl Brian who serviced my unit was very kind and made sure the work was done correctly. He found a problem that I have told some of the other service reps. did not find. I am asking the company to have him service my AC from now on. Thank you.
Been on their service plan for several years -- service was good and recieved discount on parts. Heat pump quit in jan cool period. commpressor shorted. Used heat strips a week unill new unit arrived. Salesman talked me into upgrade to new unit. after new unit installed discovered it was not heatpump. was told by sales that he decided I wouldn't want a heat pump -- he was very wrong. Now I have non heat pump new crappy thermostate not up graded one and I have heat strips only. I had asked sales if I had recieved discount rate -- he looked very surprised and stammered of course I did. But when I recieved breakdown of invoice there was no indication of discount . I called owner and complained -- he was very apologetic and said he did not know why they hadn't put in heatpump and he didn't know if I had recieved a discount. At one time during the conversation he offered to replace unit with heat pump but I did not figure it was fair to him either but said I would consider it if he would find out the reasoning behind the change and how much the discount had saved me. I guess he blew me off because it has been a couple of weeks and still no answer. By the way I just recieved my electric bill from the last cold spell -- It was over $400 the highest bill I have ever had. The service guys do a good job but watch sales and upper management.
Larry services our system and is also very professional, on time and will answer any questions we may have if he ever retires we will be in a mess no one can replace him I do know you have other technicians but we will be lost thank you
They need to check their website more often (if at all). I have sent two "contact us" emails inquiring about thermostats. No reply yet. They installed my system and there are no complaints there but if you have a website, you need to respond to it more often.
Very professional. The original service tech had a major emergency come up. They assigned me another service tech, and worked me in the same day. Very good company!
