Our 29-year-old A/C system just wasn't keeping up with our cooling needs. We called Central, and they scheduled a service call within 2 days. Darren showed up at the scheduled time and asked to be shown the inside furnace/AC system and then the outside unit. He discussed my options, which included minimal cost alternatives such as adding 1lb of refrigerant (which he did), rinsing down the outside condenser unit myself, and then checking the results. He also suggested not doing too much to the system, since it is late August, and our cooling needs will only be for a few more weeks this year. We were very pleased with the result of adding 1lb of refrigerant. It helped reduce the cool air temperature in the duct from the 62–64-degree range down to about 50 degrees. We will call them again next spring to look into a complete AC system replacement quote.
I got estimates from what I felt were the top three HVAC contractors in Billings. All three came in at almost the exact same price for services we wanted: New furnace, 95+%; New A/C unit, 2 stage; Mini-split, A/C only for upstairs bedroom; Addition of some ducting in the basement; Ducting cleaning. Turns out we couldn't use a furnace with a higher efficiency rating than 85% because of exhaust issues.
Firstly, Drew, the estimator/project manager, was the only one giving us a bid, to include my wife in the discussion: what did she hope to gain from this work. Say what you will, even though we co-own this dwelling, it is indeed her house. Central is linked with Costco, so we got a discount because of that. Second, the electrical contractor Central uses is A/U Electric. They were timely, clean & professional. Third, the owner of Central, Lenny, was our installer. With his assistant, Brock, they were clean and careful. Brock daily put tarps down, protecting our floors. Lenny took the time to correct issues from the original installation from 1986. The old furnace was about 82%. It was loud and the temperature in the house was never very even. The new furnace is a 2 stage with variable speed blower. Is is very quiet & the house temperature is even throughout. The new Mini-split is going to be a real blessing come next summer in the hot months. The new A/C compressor has been relocated to the north side of the house where it will no longer pump hot air and disruptive noise on our deck. At this point, we are very happy with the work performed and the equipment installed. Thank you.
Great company! We had purchased our a/c and heater from them a little more than 4 years ago. Service was great. Had it maintained 2 years ago. Service was great. We needed a minor repair the other day. I had contacted Lenny, the owner, the night prior. He answered from home and said he would send someone over first thing in the morning. The tech was here first thing. He was very professional and thorough. He did a great job at explaining the repairs and the price was less than expected. Could not be happier with the service!! Thank you Lenny!
On time. Discussed the problem we were experiencing. Decided as the system was functioning normally during his visit to just get a new battery for the thermostat and leave it at that for now. We have used this company often. No charge for this short call.
After repeated system shutdowns due to exhaust vent icing, Tyler called to inspect the details of our heating exhaust problem. He arrived exactly on time, did the research and went back to do his homework. A couple of hours later he called with the estimate and arrived a bit later after getting our ok. Previous de-icings had worked for a time but reoccurred. This is a replacement system with the best Lennox system. That meant that the exhaust was far, far cooler than the old system. The first attempt was to insulate the attic exhaust lines. That worked to minus 15 degrees and then iced up.
We determined together that we needed a whole new run in the basement rather than in the unconditioned attic. We found a route and agreed on the details. When Tyler returned, he installed a new 3 inch exhaust to the end of the house and deactivated the old line through the attic. He was diligent and communicative throughout. A few days later, we had another cold spell with temperatures well below zero. The new exhaust worked nicely. It developed one icicle that dropped off before there were any issues. I expect him to return to clean up a couple of issues deliberately left undone.
Someone might say that this should be a Lennox issue. But the old system had worked for 20 years and the initial repair met all Lennox specs. So. rather than argue it out and create delays, we elected to just pay for a new exhaust run and be done with it.
We are at the 80 year-old point and the failures always occurred after midnight. One was on New Years Eve. Central responded promptly and chipped out the ice. We determined that laying awake during an extreme cold event waiting for a failure was not smart. So we are happy with our choice.
If we knew then what we know now, we would have never installed the top-of-the-line system. But we did and do not regret that decision as this has been the only issue due to increased efficiency.
Central has been a pleasure to deal with and has been extremely responsive to system shutdowns.
Tyler was very prompt and courteous. Fixed the problem quickly. They got me in same day. My brother who has done HVAC for 27 years said the tech should have done some maintenance on the AC unit while he was here, like clean drain, check freon, clean unit, etc. I am happy to have AC working. Thank you for fitting us in!
