We had the "certain color" glove guys come out to tune up my aging AC unit. They said it was too old and in too bad of shape to service. They stated the refrigerant is banned and could not be used, it was freezing up the lines and there was imminent risk of water in the attic, and the unit was in too bad of shape to even clean off so the only choice I have is to buy a whole new unit. Later a salesperson came out to reiterate the same and gave a hard sell. Mike came out for a second opinion the next day and basically said they were full of it. He was able to top off the refrigerant with a newer replacement, tested the levels and temperature and said it was basically fine, and the unit was able to be washed down with a hose. It's still old and could break down but there is no reason to spend 10k+ when the unit is still blowing cold air just fine and is not leaking. Finding an honest HVAC guy is as valuable as finding an honest mechanic. Shame on some contractors trying take advantage of folks.
