The service tech was on time, friendly, and efficient. Fixed my broken system in under 30 minutes. He also showed me a workaround to give me temporary heat in case the problem happens again.

After deciding to add a heat pump to supplement the existing gas furnace in our mid-century house, we got bids from four different HVAC contractors. We selected Ballard Natural Gas on the basis of competitive price for the unit we selected (Mitsubishi NKA7 with cased Intellicoil indoor unit), and the professional approach of the estimator/sales rep Tyler Klaudt. Of all the estimators, he was the most thorough (the only one to actually take measurements of the house, do a Manual J calculation, suggest installing an additional cold air return to improve system performance) and the most willing to answer questions and discuss alternatives, while skipping the hard-sell tactics used by others. Once we selected his bid, the work was quickly scheduled. Jay and Conner arrived on time and completed the install in a day. After dealing with many contractors over the years, I would rate their work as well above the norm. The installation fit and finish were exceptional - all lines and cables neatly run, system fully tested, floors and carpets protected, debris and marks cleaned up, questions not only answered but sought repeatedly. It's the way I would do work on my own house. Kudos to them! Communications have been great throughout the process, too.

My only concern at this point is that in the week we've had the system, the gas furnace has run every day for periods of a few minutes to a few hours. Whenever the outside temperature is below about 40F, the system logic seems to default to using the furnace for heating, rather than the heat pump. At first I thought it might be because we've always turned the temperature down at night and the system can't warm the house up quickly enough in the morning to satisfy the logic under those conditions. I first adjusted the thermostat to narrow that temperature gap and, when that didn't help things, then set the house to a constant temperature for the entire 24-hour period. Unfortunately, the furnace is still being used when the temperature is in the 30s and means that we're not getting as much benefit from the heat pump as we had expected/wanted. I contacted BNG and they quickly sent a tech out to have a look. Steve the Tech couldn't find anything obviously wrong, but admitted that this is a new system/unit combination and he's not entirely up-to-speed on the Intellicoil unit yet. He suggested that, because it's a semi-smart system, it may take a little while for it to completely figure out how to handle the house and that I should contact them again if things don't improve. Hopefully that's the case, but I'm concerned that either the system is sized incorrectly for the house (despite all the calculations/planning) or that the unit logic is somehow malfunctioning. Time will tell. In the meantime, 5 Stars for BNG for quality, responsiveness, communication, and workmanship!

**Update**
After a few days of keeping the thermostat at a fixed temperature throughout the 24-hour day, the heat pump began maintaining the indoor temperature without any need for auxiliary heat and has now been doing so for a week with morning temperatures still in the low 30s (frost in the neighborhood today). I have no way to know if this is related to the heat pump logic (as the tech suggested) or is just the result of leaving the thermostat alone and letting the house stabilize, but either way it's doing the job correctly and that's all that matters to me!
