Called them at about 7pm on a weekend when the A/C quit working. They had someone out to my house in about an hour and had the A/C fixed before the sun set. The problem was a blown capacitor in the compressor outside, but they spotted it almost immediately. The technician (Alex) was friendly, fast, and offered suggestion to some unrelated questions we had, that he promised to follow up on during the preventative maintenance already scheduled for later this month.

While the technician was professional and friendly the prices were insane. It was $500 to add 2 lbs of r410a, which has a retail cost of about $12. He was here less than an hour so that is a pretty insane hourly rate.

Four days later the system was low again and it would have been another $500 for them to try some leak sealant, with no guarantee, which I declined. An actual leak search would have been twice that.

I got another company out here who successfully fixed the leak and added 2 more lbs of 410a for only $150 total. Several weeks later and it is working perfectly. Wish I had called them first before I wasted $500 here.

They defend their high prices by saying they provide an upfront quote, however they take advantage of the fact that the average homeowner does not know the actual value of the equipment and parts and assumes they are not being taken advantage of by a long established company.

I absolutely understand profit and expenses however charging $418 for $12 worth of R410a refrigerant on top of the $85 service call for a 45 minute visit is not at all reasonable. That is about a 3500% markup. The $85 covered hooking up all the gauges and diagnosing the issue. The $418 was to screw in the 25lbs tank and releasing 2lbs of it in to the system. Oh, and the leak sealant they wanted $500 has a retail value of about $35(much cheaper in bulk).

Like I said, another local company did the leak search, fixed the leak, and added 2lbs. of R410a for a grand total of $150. If you have this place come out make sure you call around once you know what is wrong and compare prices, don't just assume they are going to be reasonable. I would have ended up paying at least $1,000 to them for a $150 problem.

Jarrod was great! He took time to explain the status of the system and provided tips on how I could maintain the system between their biannual services.

The gentleman who installed my system were wonderful. Knowledgeable, professional, and personable. Marcel and Brendan (I think the names are correct) were very great.

They are always professional and honest when servicing my 24 year old HVAC. I never feel like I’m being sold something that I don’t need. Great company and great technicians.

Had an "after hours" issue with my AC around noon on a Saturday. The technician, after we diagnosed the problem (Air blowing inside, outside unit humming but the fan was not spinning) as a capacitor gave a quote of $550 for them to come to my house on Monday or $850 to come out that day on Saturday because it was after hours. The capacitor itself costs around $20 for an individual, but a company that purchases a large amount of them gets them around $9. I still wanted a professional to come out to confirm the diagnosis I found using the internet. I called around, and found another business (not sure if posting here would be appropriate) who came out at 6 in the afternoon on Saturday. He confirmed the diagnosis and charged me $150 for his service call and repair. The price of $150 may seem costly for a $9 part, but given his expertise, timeliness, and quickness of the repair (literally 10 minutes), it was well worth the cost in the 90 degree July heat.

Back to A&B Heating and Air Conditioning... shame on you and your business! I completely understand the expertise of a professional (as well as coming during the weekend) is a service that deserves respect and compensation. However, charging $550- $850 (the technician told me they charge 50% more plus on weekends) for 10 minutes worth of work and a $9 part is completely ruthless and shameful!

FYI- I am a "middle class homeowner" with many friends who are also "middle class homeowners" in the area. I took a stack of your competition's business cards. Guess who I will be recommending? Remember this, you can sheer a sheep many times, but you can only skin him once, A&B!
