My elderly dad's A/C quit working during a heat wave. He saw their ad and called to have his A/C problem diagnosed & fixed. Tech came and poked around the unit outside. He told my dad a spot of 'fluid' in the refrigerant fill port suggested it's leaking or has already leaked out and said the fan motor is seized. He then went inside to look in the air exchanger (furnace) closet. He shot a video with his iPhone showing the inside of the furnace and told my dad the burners were all rusted out. He recommended replacing everything instead of trying to fix it. He also said the closet was really small for a downdraft system which was not true! My dad called me as I was out-of-state to include me in the recommendation and decision process. Kyle, the tech, gave three Heat Pump system options spanning SEER 14, 16, and 17, for $14,900, $17,500, and $21,000, respectively (Holy cow!). I looked-up 4 ton A/C furnace systems which cost roughly $3,500 to $4,500 for RHEEM/RUDD (which is what he quoted).

I called around for other quotes and quickly found ones for $8,500 (new A/C only) and $12k A/C plus Furnace. A.L. Affordable Air & Heating came out to size a new A/C system but took a quick look and found the start capacitor was bad (a $30 part). They recommended replacing the compressor (noisy & 27 years old) and refilling the system with modern refrigerant (R-401a). They had it working the next day better than before for $2,400 :)

The tech tested the cooling and capacitor. I asked him to hose off the filter in the condenser. To completely disassemble and clean the inside is another service they offer, so this was more like an inspection for their annual contract.
